Linux is best for YOU
As far as a person who is curious about the electronics of a computer is concerned, Linux OS is the first choice. Though other OS like Windows are highly efficient as well as user friendly, an open source operating system like Linux is more precious in a students view. The only reason is that Linux is genuine and transparent. One using Linux can easily know what is going on in your PC. Thus you can develop your own programs and this will develop an overall internal structure of your computer. Many engineers and students opt for Linux, because many famous electronics based and other development environments are provided by GNU movement and some works only in Linux however we can do the same in windows but it requires a virtual Linux environment such as Cygwin or Mingw.
Most people don’t require the source code itself, and want an easy way to download and install a program by a double click. For those people, it is recommended that to not use Linux. But some people are curious about the working “style” of the program like what do? How do? Why do? of programs. Only way is to analyze the source code. But many software developers will not give source code and is the business secret. Such people will not be satisfied with just a “freeware” and are only satisfied with software labeled “Open source”. For Linux operating system, you get both source code and binary packages like RPM(Red hat package manager) which don’t require ‘tedious’ work of compiling and installing a program source code in each PC.
How you select most compatible Linux for you?
There are a number of Linux distributions are ready to help you. But selecting a good distribution plays in important role. The well- known distributions are Redhat, Fedora, Debian, Open SUSE, Ubuntu, Mandriva etc. A lot of other distributions are there. If you opt for Open SUSE, You require comparatively large RAM and other compatible components. But it will give best graphics and all. That is why most Linux users call it sexiest. Fedora is also good distribution, require lower pompousness than SUSE- a free version available from RedHat. Redha is not much “Free”, but Opensource. Ubuntu is now coming to the front because it is completely free like Debian. If you have a slow internet connection, it is a tedious work to download the full distro. So you can order for a free CD from Ubuntu. Debian is also a non profit project. Other distributions are also on the web. If you are ready to compile everything on your Linux, it is good to use Freespire.
Linux is free from Virus
The best way to avoid virus is to avoid external usage of memory, and vist only a limited number of good websites. But as far as a researcher is concerned, the research is no limited to some white pages. So virus attack may be risk. I recommend you to use linux because, it is not much infected by virus. Nowadays, so many virus are there, but do you know their ultimate aim is to attack Windows? Yes. Linux is free and opensource. Therefore Nobody has an intention to build virus for it!! I not mean that Linux is completely free from virus. You must do appropriate precautions in either Windows or Linux, but risk in Linux is probably less
.
Some of us try to connect the “cold war” between Gnu open source movement and Windows to the war of capitalism Vs Communism. Windows is placed in the capitalist side and Gnu in the communist side. Oops! I think this convention is absolutely wrong. I don’t know windows is capitalist or not, but Linux is not connected to either side. Linux is made for piece. Open source movement is not exactly 180deg opposite to windows. They provide an OS ‘like’ Windows just for free. Moreover, it is open source itself.
Many open source soft wares are compatible with windows, but not vice versa. Most file system formats are compatible with Linux including FAT32, NTFS (of windows), but not vice versa. Linux is not a weapon to destroy Windows. The life of Linux is greatly depend on Linux gurus and programmers who contribute to this project day by day, helping beginners in forums without any peculiarly interest.
Why Linux is free?
Before asking this question, you should know what is a software. We know that it cannot be seen (not through monitor ;-)) or cannot be touched. Everyday you go to market and purchase some fruits or anything else, and pay the bill because the result of paying the ill is something exists in your bag. But in the case of software, nothing is to see, nothing to touch. But truth is that every soft ware is the result of tedious work of many brains. So you should pay the bill. Then why Linux is free? Some people are openhearted and are ready to share their software for free. You should know the truth that nobody can provide perfect software by themselves. The best way is to make it open source so that everyone in the world is free to contribute it.
